Founded in 1955, the institute used to be under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the State Bureau of Metallurgical Industry, the Work Committee of Central Enterprises and the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council. In 2009, it was merged into China Minmetals, one of the Fortune 500 Global companies, becoming its wholly-owned subsidiary. In 2010, it was renamed as Changsha Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy Co., Ltd. (CRIMM) after overall restructuring. The corporation has established a set of modern corporation management system. It is composed of 11 functional divisions, 8 direct subordinate units, 15 subsidiaries with associate companies, in which Kingray New Materials Science & Technology Co., Ltd is a listed subsidiary with share held by CRIMM.
As a national comprehensive research institute, CRIMM has established two major business segments: engineering and technology for exploitation and utilization of mineral resources, R &D and industrialization of advanced materials. Backed up with strong R&D capabilities, the corporation has built four national experimental research platforms and three provincial experimental development platforms. It owns laboratories covering an area of 16,830 square meters and 4 pilot plants including one of the largest well-equipped pilot-scale test bases for mineral processing research and one of domestic rare professional testing bases for pipeline transportation research at home. The corporation can provide one-stop service integrating R&D, consultancy and engineering, as well as EPC contracting, with geological experimental and testing qualifications (Grade A) for geological survey (including rock and mineral identification, rock and mineral analysis, beneficiation-metallurgy testing), qualification certificate (Grade A) for metallurgical and mining engineering in metallurgical industry, and corresponding consultancy qualification.
Regarding the engineering and technology for exploitation and utilization of mineral resources, CRIMM has formed core competency in the technology of mining, beneficiation, metallurgy, materials and environmental protection. It has always been in charge of national scientific and technological projects for comprehensive utilization of mineral resources, making outstanding contributions to the technical progress. CRIMM has also played backbone role in tackling key technical problems in comprehensive utilization of complex polymetallic paragenetic and associated mineral resources, beneficiation of lean hematite ore as well as comprehensive utilization of ocean polymetallic nodules, consequently winning National Top Ten Science and Technology Achievement Award, the first and second prize of State Scientific and Technological Progress Award and the Grand Prize of Progress Awards for Metallurgical Science and Technology, with more than 900 scientific and technological achievements obtained and more than 200 patents entitled.
In regards of development and industrialization of advanced materials, the corporation has gradually formed high-tech industry cluster with self-owned intellectual property rights, with products mainly falling into two categories of battery materials and manganese materials. The corporation, as the member of State-owned Enterprise Electric Vehicle Industry Alliance, mainly engages in the development of spherical nickel hydroxide, precursor of cathode materials for lithium battery, lithium cobalt oxides and multiple composite cathode materials etc. It has become the world’s top six supplier of Ni-MH battery with the production capacity ranking the second at home, and has been in the leading position in term of technology and domestic market share of high-tech products, with the market share of cathode material for lithium ion battery ranking the top six in China. An electrolytic manganese plant of corporation with an annual output of 60,000 tons has been completed with both technical and management level being advanced in the industry. The corporation, being earliest involved in the R&D and industrialization of electronic grade manganese tetroxide technology at home, has become the world's largest manganese tetroxide production operator.

Laboratory of Mineral Resources Technology and Application, CRIMM is mainly engaged in beneficiation and metallurgical technology of iron, manganese, chromium, non-ferrous metals, precious metals, light metals and non-metallic mineral, equipment R& D and comprehensive utilization of metallurgical slag, sulfuric acid residue, the power plant fly ash and mine solid waste as well as production wastewater treatment and efficient reuse. Our range of services involves new mine, new metallurgical processes, new technology and metallurgical test researches; development and sales of beneficiation reagents; mine wastewater treatment; optimization of the old mining process; metallurgy, technical services of mining construction and transformation, consulting and designing.
Our laboratory has made a lot of achievements in scientific research over the years, including the National Top 10 Science and Technology Achievement Award for once in 1992, two first prizes, seven second prizes and four third prizes of National Science and Technology Progress, one grand prize for ministerial-level scientific and technological progress, first prizes for 11 times and dozens of other awards at all levels.
